The thought of Alyssa not being at the ball, which meant that she didn’t have to share Ryan was a selfish thought, a thought usually was beneath her, but tonight the idea of having Ryan to herself made her almost want Samuel to keep his own distance, though she knew that he’d be taking her for a dance. It was something the twins always did when the came to the ball even if Samuel had a date of his own they always had a dance together, she supposed it was his way to check in on her during the ball without having to interrupt her evening or stay close to gage her feelings based on her expressions, something her twin was extremely gifted at knowing. Seeing how close they were dancing would likely raise his big brother hackles and she knew that Ryan would get the questions about it asked later, likely when Savannah wasn’t around to overhear so he could protect her if he felt the need to. She was beginning to notice that if she went on a date with a boy and Samuel didn’t approve then she didn’t tend to get a second date, hell, they usually gave her a pretty wide berth and she knew he was just looking out for her, and tried to let the small annoyance of it roll off her back. At the end of the day Samuel was her best friend and was looking out for her, so she supposed if he didn’t like a boy she liked when perhaps it was a sign that she wasn’t meant for them. The problem would be if Samuel just had a problem with her liking any boy and him giving a blanket disapproval of her dating at all, which would mean going against her brother’s wishes at some point if she could get the boy she chose to do so with to also go along with it. Her brother was scary enough none yet had bothered trying to win her affection without his approval. Which was insane given she knew he was a giant teddy bear inside. “I believe you. It’s him you’ll have to convince not me.” She chuckled knowing her twin was a tougher sell on the idea, but they were friends so that had a step up over the other boys that had been interested in Savannah. She was glad that Ryan hadn’t made some outlandish promise he couldn’t keep about never hurting her, or nothing ever going wrong because that wasn’t a realistic promise, and the future was unknown and anything could happen. Of course they both knew that, both of them had lost a parent young, Savannah losing her dad before she’d ever been born, Ryan his mum when he was young, but she’d never let the fact that she’d grown up part of her life without a dad stop her from living her life, she heard so many stories of him and her mum back when they were dating, how they fell for each other, how happy he’d been to discover she was pregnant with them. How he’d tried to get her to drink wine that night before he knew and had practically ran to dump out the glass when he opened the present that revealed it all. Ness would give her own stories about him and how he’d been as a dad, and Savannah sometimes felt as if she’d known him and she then she was able to look at Josh the man who did love them as his own, and know that she was blessed to have two men who’d loved her and wanted only the best for her.
Ryan liking her as more than a friend had thrown her, had made her the happiest girl in the world after a minute of being the most anxious, a title she was pretty sure her mum held every minute of every day, but she was glad the anxiety of not knowing what she was agreeing to keep their friendship in tact for was only the reveal of his feelings. She wondered how much Ryan had been scared to confess his feelings, how hard it must have been to be the one to put it out there first not knowing what Savannah herself would say, and she was glad that he was braver than she was in taking that step to confessing them. Being able to admit her feelings had felt great but she’d known that they were reciprocated before she’d opened her mouth, and she knew she wouldn’t have been brave enough to say it first. It wasn’t scary in the same way that it was for Ryan to say it first, but sharing her feelings she looked at Ryan and saw his relief on his face that she shared them, and it made her heart melt a little more for him. What she’d liked most was that he hadn’t made it the only option, that it wasn’t return his feelings or they’d never be able to get back to their friendship, that he was willing to do his best to put them aside to remain her friend, and she was pretty sure her feelings for him grew at what he was willing to do for her. For them and their friendship. “I do. I’ve spent all night wondering what sort of date this was, drove Ness nuts with the back and forth on what you’d wanted tonight to be.” She confessed with a rueful smile.
She wondered how often he’d had these feelings, if he’d invited her to the ball with the feelings or if they’d grown since asking her, but started in telling her about the last girl he’d dated telling him to think of the future and that it’d been her he’d saw it with. “Sounds like that girl saw something we didn’t see yet ourselves.” She chuckled as he brought his hand up to her cheek and she smiled at the motion, the little romantic gesture that was the first of its kind and she doubted would be the last. “You did a great job. Perfect first date set-up for the books. Hard to top though for a second date.” She joked, knowing that their second date could be sitting in the common room doing homework and drinking hot chocolate and she’d be just as happy as she was with this being their first date. It was the person not the location she knew that mattered. The fact that he’d done all these feelings admitting and the ball was meant to be a date, well, that meant that it could very well also be an anniversary. Given how much Savannah loved Christmas she’d been quick to pick up that bonus tidbit and lock onto it and ask if that meant it was their anniversary and watch Ryan laugh at her and her predictable excitement of the idea, “Oh that isn’t why you decided to tell me on Christmas Eve was because it was my favorite holiday?” She joked smiling at him, she didn’t think she could stop smiling at him as they did their sway dancing and she relished being in his arms like this, “Why wouldn’t I want a label? I like you and you like me. We both want this to be a date. Sounds like boyfriend/girlfriend things to me. Plus I do like the idea of getting to call you boyfriend. Change your name to boyfriend in my phone. But if you want to slow it down on the label I will contain myself and slow my roll.” She told him, excited at the prospect of being his girlfriend but if he wanted to ease into it, adjust to them just having feelings for each other without the label then she’d be just as capable of doing that. They were a team, and label or no label she’d always want them to be on the same page.
