Max would be the first to admit that he’d had ups and downs during his time at Hogwarts, his first year had started off in the most shocking way possible when he had ended up being sorted into Slytherin and things hadn’t ended up getting any better when word had spread around the school that he was a werewolf. Even now he could still remember the looks on the faces of the other students as he’d passed them by, they had looked at him like he was a pariah but over time things had settled down and he had started to find his feet. There were still times when he lost control of his temper and lashed out and most people knew now not to press those buttons but there were always going to be those who liked to get a reaction out of him for one reason or another. Max knew that he was doing much better at controlling his anger lately but his control still wasn’t perfect and there were times when he slipped but he was doing his best and that seemed to go a long way as far as most people were concerned. He had been careful to go for classes that he knew would hold his attention, not all of them were the most interesting but he knew that he wanted to make sure that he had options after graduation so he was going to try and make it work.
Before that he knew that he needed to get through the next two years, though. Things had seemed to be going far too well over the last few years, he had plenty of friends around him now and he had other werewolves that he could spend the full moon with. For such a long time he had felt like he was an outcast who was living in his dad’s shadow but now he didn’t feel like that. Now he was able to do things on his own terms and he had accepted what he had become the night he was bitten. He had hated being a werewolf for a long time because it made him different to everyone else but now it was a part of him and he couldn’t imagine changing that for anything.
That day his Defence Against the Dark Arts class had come to an end and he had headed out to the courtyard with some friends since he had some free time before his next class. A few others he didn’t really know had tagged along as well and things had been going fine until one of the guys he didn’t know had started making snide comments about some of his other friends, one of whom was a boy Max had been getting closer to lately. It was no secret that Max didn’t buy into the Slytherin pureblood mentality that certain others in his house did and it never had been but there was something about the way the guy was speaking that was enough to push Max’s buttons. His friends could see that he was starting to lose his temper even though he was trying to keep it under control and in the end they told the other guy that he was being an ass and started steering Max away from those who had joined the group of their own accord. Max had hoped that would be enough to get the guy to drop it but it wasn’t, instead he pushed Max to the ground and asked if he was off to see his boyfriend. Right away Max knew who he meant, there wasn't actually anything going on between the two of them but Max's feelings towards the boy were somewhat confusing and hearing the other boy talking like that was enough to make his blood boil. Without even thinking about it he half shifted and pushed himself to his feet before taking a swing at the guy and knocking him to the ground. “He’s not my boyfriend but even if I was seeing someone I don’t see how any of my relationships are any business of yours. At least I’ve been in relationships, I can’t say the same for you,” he growled, hardly noticing the smirks on the faces of his friends as they looked down at the other boy in disgust. “Good luck finding someone who could put up with you,” Max added before heading to the other side of the courtyard to try and calm down as the other boy was hurried out of the area by the friends he’d been trying to show off for.
