Max was nervous and he just couldn’t help it. He had been to the Yule Ball before but in the past it had always been different – his dates had always been girls. So much had changed that year and the shift in his relationship with Alec was without a doubt the biggest change of them all. It had taken a lot for Max to open up his heart but he had developed feelings for his best friend without even realising it and it had taken a jerk in his house calling Alec his boyfriend for Max to realise exactly what Alec meant to him. They had shared their first kiss that day and it had solidified in Max’s mind that he really did like Alec as more than a friend. It wasn’t something that he had expected and truth be told it had taken him a while to get his head around it but he couldn’t deny now that it felt right. Alec was the person at Hogwarts who truly got him, he knew what it was like to be a werewolf and he knew everything that went along with it. He might not know what it was like to be the only werewolf in a family of humans but that was something that Max had had to figure out on his own. Either way it helped having someone around who knew what he went through every full moon and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Taking a deep breath, Max did up the buttons of his shirt before pulling on his jacket. He didn’t dress up like this too often but it felt right given the circumstances. He and Alec had never hidden what they were to each other from the rest of the school but they had never done something like this together either. Max wasn’t sure how the evening was going to go but he knew that he wanted it to go well and he would do everything in his power to make that happen. Checking his reflection in the mirror one more time, Max headed out of the Slytherin Dungeon and made his way up to the Great Hall. He knew that he was early so he decided to wait outside for Alec to arrive. Max knew that he could have gone ahead and gone in but the truth was that it didn’t feel right doing that without Alec. Instead he pulled his phone out of his pocket and sent Alec a text to let him know where he was waiting and once he arrived Max’s hand rested against his cheek and he pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. “Maybe you should start dressing up like this more often, you look great,” he admitted, a genuine smile on his face as he pulled back before the nerves set in once more as he held a hand out to Alec. “Are you ready to do this?” he asked, knowing that if they were going to give whatever this was between them a real shot then they might as well start now.
