James already knew that he was in trouble with Iris, he’d been in relationships in the past but the sparks he felt between the two of them were something different entirely. Iris was beautiful and she knew it but he was getting the chance to see that there was so much more to her than that and that was something he was certain that very few people got to see. Iris was guarded, an unsurprising consequence of the way she was raised, but when they were alone he was able to see glimmers of the girl beneath the surface and that was someone that he liked far more than he should. “I wouldn’t say that, it was more like my parents wanted me to be a gentleman,” James shrugged. Either way he knew that he wouldn’t have answered Iris’s question about how often he imagined sharing a bed with her anyway because that really would get him in trouble. He knew that it would never happen, she was happy to flirt with him and mess with his head but he was certain that Iris would never be interested in him in that way, not the way he was interested in her. “Nothing like that, I just know you’re full of surprises,” James shrugged. He didn’t doubt that Iris was beautiful underneath it all but she was so used to having to use her body to get what she wanted and he wasn’t sure she had ever had anyone who was interested in her because of who she was as an individual rather than which family she belonged to. “There’s more to me than that and you know it,” James countered even though he wouldn’t be surprised if Iris didn’t want to admit that. He honestly wasn’t sure whether she said the things she did to mess with him sometimes or because she felt the sparks between them just like he did and not knowing was starting to get a little annoying. Snapping out of his thoughts, James couldn’t help but laugh as Iris said that they wouldn’t have to spike the punch if it was already done. “And deprive you of the fun of it? Why would they do that?” he chuckled. If Iris hadn’t spiked the punch then someone else would have, it was a tradition after all, but it was one that he knew the students enjoyed.
He knew he should have turned Iris in for spiking the punch but the truth was that James had no intention of doing that. For some reason he had taken to protecting her from trouble rather than turning her in like he should. He knew that wasn’t what a Head Boy was meant to do but he just couldn’t help it. He knew that things with her dad weren’t great and deep down there was a part of James that wanted to make something better for her even if that was only making sure that she didn’t get into any real trouble while he was around. “There must be something you can do to break his control over you. You’re his daughter, not his possession,” he said fiercely. What Iris could do to break the hold her father had on her James wasn’t sure but he was certain that if anyone could think of something then it would be her. “I really wish there was something I could do to make him see sense,” James added. He knew that her father wouldn’t take any notice of him, after all he was Harry Potter’s son and it was no secret that their dads were on opposite sides of the fight while Voldemort was alive, but James couldn’t shake the feeling that he wanted to make sure that Iris got something closer to what she deserved somehow. Her father might not care about her happiness but James did and he wanted Iris to have the chance to have the kind of future that she wanted, not one that would make her completely miserable.
James was surprised when Iris agreed with him that perhaps they should try but he recovered quickly and he felt a smile touch his lips. “Name the time and place and I’ll be there,” he said, his gaze level as his eyes met hers. He wanted Iris, that much was clear, but putting that into words wasn’t something that James was used to doing. He was so used to trying to resist whatever it was that he felt for her but in that moment he didn’t want to do that. He was seeing a different side of Iris again tonight, one that enjoyed kissing him and being close to him it seemed, and James wanted to see just where this could go. He knew that Iris could just be messing with his head again but he knew that he needed to find out. She had already hidden the truth from him about remembering their first kiss but she had finally been honest with him about that and he hoped that she would be honest with him about this now. Something had shifted between them after that day on the quidditch pitch, the floodgates had already been opened when Iris kissed him but she had claimed to forget it. Now he knew the truth and she had kissed him again so he knew that she actually wanted to kiss him as much as he wanted to kiss her. Kissing Iris back, James couldn’t help but laugh as she asked if he was going to have her arrested for kissing without consent. “More like have you arrested if you don’t kiss me again,” he said, a smirk forming on his face as he leaned forward and kissed her again. “You can kiss me whenever you like, I just didn’t want to push my luck with you by kissing you first after you said you didn’t remember that first kiss,” he shrugged. Learning that Iris did remember the first kiss and that she had instigated a second changed everything. “I’d say more trying to have realistic expectations for tonight rather than a lack of imagination,” James countered as they continued to move to the music. “I wasn’t even sure you’d be here tonight, let alone that you would actually want to kiss me. I’m glad this is proving to be better than how you thought your evening would go though, I’ll take that as a compliment,” he said, a smile easing its way across his face as he leaned down and kissed the top of her head gently.
