Just because Dylan had dropped off the face of the Earth for a few months when the Ministry needed new recruits the most didn’t mean she deserved to be punished. She had claimed her absence had been due to a family emergency, which was true enough. The fact that this emergency lined up perfectly with the Enlightened’s spectacular appearance was something her boss had been all too happy to point out. She had been hoping she could get away without sharing too many details, but she’d had to make up a story about her grandmother getting sick to cover herself. If they looked into the story they might realize that said grandparent lived in Italy and Dylan hadn’t actually left the country, but if someone mentioned that she would just build on the lie, creating false memories like a spider wove a web. She wasn’t known for being a liar because she always got carried away with it. It was like a game to her, adding on little details until everyone would believe her. The problem was keeping track of these details. It was best to just have one story to tell, and to keep that story as close to the truth as possible. Of course, with her new role spying on the Enlightened she’d find herself in a lot of tricky positions where the truth wasn’t an option. Dylan was all too aware that the new game she had started playing could cost her her life, but it didn’t matter. Her life had been wasted before. Worse, it had caused people pain. There was a family mourning a child because of the actions she had taken. She couldn’t allow herself to keep being used as a mindless weapon.
Of course, the Ministry would use her as a tool just as readily as the Enlightened. They would demand she follow their rules, even if those rules were stupid. One such rule was this decision to make her do more training, despite the fact that she had proven she was ready to go out into the field before she'd left. She'd even been on a couple of her own missions, and it had been glorious. That should have been enough to prove herself, but no. Instead they wanted her to shadow one of their officers like a lost puppy. They had assigned her to a certain Fin LaSalle, who was undoubtedly a mindless drone who had been working for the Ministry for years. She was fully prepared for whatever this mission was to be the most boring one she'd ever have to be a part of. They wouldn't give her anything fun after ditching them for so many months. Especially not if they suspected her of being a part of the Enlightened, which admittedly could have been the case. The coincidence her boss had pointed out was too big for no one to wonder.
Dylan read over her assignment one more time and wrinkled her nose. She hadn't been given nearly as much information about the assignment as she wanted. She was given a name, a place, and a time. It was just like the jobs her parents occasionally assigned her. Heaven forbid she actually be given enough information to be useful to anyone. It was only recently she'd been allowed to attend the Enlightened meetings, and that was because she had told her parents she wouldn't do anything else for them if she didn't. She loved her parents, even if they were only adoptive parents, but their beliefs just didn't align with hers. She would gladly betray them for a chance to help the Order.
Dylan sighed and began packing her purse. She wasn't going to show up on time, but if she wanted to be on this mission at all she had to get going soon. If she missed it she was willing to bet they'd assign her something even more boring to waste her time. She apparated into the ministry about three minutes late, curious to see what her supervisor would think of the slight delay. It was better to start acting out now rather than later when he already had a solid impression of her formed. Let him underestimate her, it would only come in handy for proving herself. She boldly approached the man she thought was the Auror she'd been assigned to. "LaSalle?" she asked. "I'm Dylan Marino."
