The exes talk wasn’t something that Summer had purposefully avoided but the truth was that she hadn’t really given it much thought. Her relationships while she was at school felt like they happened a lifetime ago now and she knew that it had to be that much worse for Micheal. Now they were talking about her first boyfriend, though, Summer couldn’t deny that she was curious about Micheal’s past relationships. She knew a bit about his relationship with Grace’s mum or at least she knew how it had ended anyway but other than that it wasn’t something that they had ever really talked about too much. Summer knew that not all Hogwarts relationships lasted and she had known that while she and her ex were together but it had still hurt a lot when they decided to call it a day. She had understood that he’d needed to be there for his family but it had still broken her heart to learn that he wasn’t going to be able to return to Hogwarts and it wouldn’t have been fair to either of them to carry on like they were. “It was,” she agreed as Micheal said it was honourable of her ex to leave and take care of his dad. “I’m glad it did too. It still broke my heart when we ended things but we both knew that it was for the best,” she shrugged. They couldn’t have kept up the long distance thing at that age and it wouldn’t have been fair on either of them to keep trying to make it work. “Things were really good between us while he was at Hogwarts, other than the ending it was a pretty good first relationship all things considered,” she added. She knew that she had been lucky, her ex had taught her to open her heart and she didn’t regret their time together one bit. “There were a couple of other short-lived relationships along the way but then I met Finn and you know what happened there.” Micheal had been there for her after Finn died and he’d helped her pick up the pieces. She knew that she wouldn’t have been able to get through any of what had happened without him and it felt right that he was the one who had helped her move on. “Now you know about my past relationships, what about yours?” Summer asked. She knew she would understand if Micheal didn’t want to talk about it but she was definitely curious. “In that case I’d really appreciate it, thank you,” Summer said sincerely as Micheal said it wouldn’t be any trouble to arrange to have Angel’s and her mum’s houses warded. She hadn’t wanted anyone to think she was taking advantage of her relationship with Micheal by making sure that her loved ones were protected but she knew that it really would put her mind at ease to know that their homes were safe. Summer rolled her eyes playfully as Micheal told her to stop worrying. “You know me, it’s what I do,” she laughed. “Oh no, if anything I think they’d be doubly protected if you were the one to do it,” she assured him. She knew just how good Micheal was at not just the job he had now but the one he’d had before as well and she didn’t doubt that he would make sure they were protected. “Thank you,” she said gently. “I know how much they worry about me and the girls but I worry about them just as much.” Chantal had Seth to keep her safe and Ana had Matt but that definitely didn’t mean that Summer’s mind was put completely at ease.
Even if it didn’t pan out, Summer knew that Micheal’s offer came from a good place. She had seen how upset and angry he was about what had happened to Grace when he’d showed up on her doorstep and she suspected that this was his way of making sure that the same thing didn’t happen to someone she cared about. He had gone above and beyond by offering to protect her first boyfriend but the truth was that as long as her mum, brother and her two best friends were happy then that was good enough for Summer. Her adoptive siblings still lived at home with her mum so she knew that they would be safe there as well. “I will. If students will go to that length to get at someone they don’t like, I dread to think what people older than them will do,” Summer admitted, a shudder running through her as she spoke. She knew that Will and Kirsten had done their best, it sounded like they’d acted as soon as they’d heard what had happened and Summer knew that they couldn’t have been expected to know about it in advance. Summer still didn’t understand what had caused the girls to act like that but if they were capable of such a thing then she really did hate to think what their parents and others who thought like them might be capable of. They all had a piece of daylight jewellery to protect them but Summer knew that it wouldn’t hurt to have a backup in case something happened to that like it had to Grace’s necklace. As Micheal asked whether he wanted her to reach out to Kirsten or whether she felt comfortable asking herself, Summer felt a smile touch her lips. “I’ll ask her, don’t worry. I’ve known her for a long time, she was my Head of House,” she grinned. She knew that she didn’t want to put Kirsten out but she wouldn’t be surprised if the woman would be expecting a visit from her after this anyway. She knew just how protective Kirsten was of her own children and Summer was the same with her girls. She would do anything to keep them safe and she wasn’t too proud to ask for help.
Summer knew that there were plenty of people out there who might want to be with Micheal because of the position he held or the money he had but that wasn’t why Summer was with him at all. She was with him because somewhere along the way she had fallen for him and she knew that she didn’t want to keep that hidden any longer. It was important to Summer that Grace like her because she really did want all of them to be a family one day and as generous as Micheal’s offer was, it was one that Summer knew that she couldn’t accept. “There are probably enough people who think that’s why I’m with you as it is,” Summer pointed out. She knew that was normally how it went, whenever someone got together with someone who was in a position of power there were always going to be those who thought that it was all about money. That might be true for others but for Summer that couldn’t be further from the truth. “Thank you, I know it’s the right decision,” she said, offering him a gentle smile as she looked over at him. She didn’t want Grace to get the wrong impression about Summer’s relationship with her dad and she really did have enough money of her own anyway so it was for the best. Summer knew that she could have kept what Alanna had said to herself but she was curious to see how Micheal would react to it. She knew that she was never going to let the girls forget Finn but Micheal had been there for them for such a long time that she honestly had thought that it would happen sooner or later. His reaction was unreadable, however, and for a moment Summer wasn’t sure how to answer his question but in the end she decided to be honest with him. “At first I thought it was an accident but when I asked if you were who she meant, she nodded and said you were her dad,” Summer explained. “Honestly I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first. I knew it would happen eventually but it was a little strange hearing her call someone other than Finn her dad,” she admitted, studying Micheal’s expression carefully as she spoke. Summer had had conflicting feelings about it at first but she was pretty sure that was natural given the circumstances. “After it sank in I realised that it was a good thing. You have been a dad to her. You’re the dad she knows and I love that she thinks of you as such,” she said, her eyes meeting his as she tried to figure out whether he thought it was a good thing or not. “How do you feel about it?” she asked, knowing that she needed to know the answer to that question. She hoped he thought it was a good thing but it wasn’t long before all thoughts of that were forgotten and Summer lost herself in the notion of being with him.
It had been so long since Summer had woken up in someone’s arms like this and the truth was that she had missed it more than she had realised. In those first few weeks after Finn died there had been times when she had woken up to find that Angel, her mum or one of her friends had wrapped their arms around her when she’d cried herself to sleep but this was different. This time when she woke up to find Micheal’s arms around her she felt perfectly content and it showed in the smile that was present on her face as she looked over at him. She couldn’t help it that her body made her wake up early even when the girls weren’t in the house but it meant that she got to spend more time with Micheal since he soon woke up too so she certainly wasn’t complaining. It was easy for Summer to fill Micheal in on a story about the girls and it wasn’t long before he was sharing a story about Grace in return. “Sounds like she either forgot she’d refused to eat it or she knew better than to get on your bad side again,” Summer laughed. “I think every kid goes through phases like that at times.” It was only natural but from what she’d heard most of them soon grew out of it. “I know that feeling all too well, I had more than a few nights like that with the girls when they were younger,” she nodded. She still had some days like that with them now but they didn’t come around as often and for that she was truly grateful. Having one kid go through that would be bad enough but Summer had two and it had definitely made things pretty trying at times, that was for sure. As Micheal said she was the only one he wanted to go to after he left Grace and that he was there for her when she needed him as well, Summer felt a smile touch her lips as she let her hand rest gently against his cheek. “I know you are,” she promised. “You’re welcome here any time, whether the girls are here or not,” she said as her eyes met his. “I would like us to have more nights like last night though, minus what happened to Grace of course,” she added. Summer knew that it might not have happened the way either of them had thought it would but she really didn’t regret it one bit and she didn’t want Micheal to regret it either. They weren’t invincible but they were vampires and with any luck that meant that they would have a long future together for all of that. His next words were enough to make her breath catch in her throat and Summer studied him carefully for a moment, not sure whether she had just imagined him saying what she thought she’d heard. It soon became clear that he had actually said those words out loud, though, and Summer pressed her lips against his and kissed him passionately. “It’s not too soon. I love you too,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. “I wanted to say those words to you last night, I was just afraid of saying it first.” Micheal’s relationship with the girls was solid but Summer knew that she still had some work to do with Grace and she hadn’t known whether Micheal would be ready to put that out there until he knew that she and Grace were on good terms too but it seemed that he didn’t have any such reservations and she really was glad about that.
