The moment James had stepped off the boat and headed up to Hogwarts, he had known that his time at the school was going to be special. He had grown up hearing stories about his parents’ time at Hogwarts and he had found himself looking forward to being able to make some memories like that of his own but this year wasn't quite what he’d had in mind. He had made some good friends during his time there and as each of his siblings joined him he had done his best to be there to look out for them. He knew that he couldn’t protect them from everything, he hadn’t been able to stop Lily being picked on by some older kids and he knew that Albus had been through some tough times as well but he always tried to be there for them when he could. It had never mattered to James that his brother was in a different house to him, Albus was still family and if he was honest James admired his brother’s strength to go against the norm. All James wanted was for his siblings to be happy so he knew that he was never going to judge either of them for anything that they did. He might tease them from time to time but that was just a part of being a sibling and James knew that no matter what happened he would always have their backs. The same was true of Teddy as well, he might not be related to them by blood but he was still family and he always would be as far as James was concerned. His immediate family had always been close but add to the mix his aunts, uncles and cousins as well and James knew that he was actually really lucky.
If anything happened to any of them James really wasn’t sure what he would do. The moment he had heard that his dad and Teddy had been involved in stopping the attacks on Hogsmeade he had found himself worrying about them but more than anything he was glad that Albus and Lily hadn’t been there. It had been bad enough sitting with Lily in the hospital after she managed to find her way into the medicine cabinet as a child, back then he hadn’t completely understood what had happened but he had seen how terrified his parents were and James had stayed with her for as long as they had let him. It was the same when she was attacked at Hogwarts, he had sat with her and comforted her and he had sworn to himself that he would do everything he could in order to stop both Lily and Albus from getting hurt like that. Now James tried to check in on them both as often as he could but it had to be said that was easier to do with Lily than it was with Albus considering that the two of them were in the same house. He had never let it stop him from reaching out to his brother and making sure that he was doing alright, though, and that day he had sent Albus a text asking if he wanted to hang out and suggesting that they meet out by the ice rink. James would be the first to admit that he wasn’t the best at skating, in fact he felt like Bambi on ice sometimes, but it was a way of escaping everything that was going on for a while and that was never going to be a bad thing so that was where he found himself waiting for his brother to show up.
