Right now, none of what had happened over the last few hours felt real. Casper had been spending time at home with his dad, Meagan and Ellie and they’d thought that the pizza they’d ordered had arrived but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead of the pizza delivery person, it was Meagan’s mum and some of her friends intent on taking her with them. It had been over a year since Meagan’s mum had abandoned her and sent her to live with the dad who hadn’t even known that she existed before she turned up on the doorstep and the three of them had become a proper family, four if you counted Ellie. Casper had seen how upset their dad was when he woke up and was told that Meagan had been taken, it had taken a Healer who was friends with their dad securing him to the bed and threatening to snap his wand to get him to stay put rather than joining Ellie and the Guardians in their search for Meagan. Casper had seen the way finding out that he’d missed out on so much of Meagan’s life had affected their dad at first when Meagan moved in with them but he finally seemed to have made his peace with that and now this was going on. Casper felt like he had failed his family, his dad had taken him in and adopted him and it had been Casper’s job to keep Meagan safe and get her to their uncle Will’s house where they could call for help but they hadn’t made it that far. Casper had been knocked out but he had still heard Meagan’s screams as she was taken away and he knew that he was never going to forget that sound.
Now all they could do was wait and Casper had never felt as helpless in his life. He didn’t know what he could say to his dad to make it better, in fact he was pretty sure there wasn’t anything he could say that would make any of this better, and he couldn’t help get his sister back either. Their dad had made it clear that he didn’t blame Casper for Meagan being taken but Casper still blamed himself and he didn’t know if he would ever be able to stop doing that. He had always wanted a sibling and the day Meagan came into their lives he had sworn to protect her but he had failed. Deep down he knew that it wasn’t his fault, the man who took her seemed to have come out of nowhere but it didn’t change the fact that she had been taken while he was supposed to be looking out for her and nothing could change that. Casper and his dad had been put in the same room while they recovered, Casper had a concussion, some cuts and a few bruised ribs but other than that he was pretty lucky. His dad had gotten off much worse and Casper had stayed with him for as long as he could before needing to get some air. Neither of them were allowed to leave St Mungo’s until they were discharged so that limited where he could go but he knew he couldn’t stay in that room a moment longer. Honestly he could hardly bring himself to look at his dad right now, the guilt over what happened was far too great, and no matter how many times his dad told him it wasn’t his fault, it didn’t make it any easier to deal with. Casper knew that his dad could have died, his injuries were a lot worse than Casper’s were and it was going to take time for him to heal, but he was going to be fine and that was a relief at least. Promising his dad that he would be back soon, Casper checked whether his dad wanted anything before heading out to get them both a drink. In all honesty he just needed to get out for a bit and Casper grabbed the drinks along with a couple of snacks for them both but he wasn’t sure that he was ready to head back just yet. It was then that he saw a familiar face making her way towards him and Casper set everything he was carrying down on the nearest table before wrapping his arms around her and hugging her tightly. “Yasmin,” he breathed, quickly blinking away the tears that had formed in his eyes. “What are you doing here?” he asked, unaware that her uncle Riley had called her and told her that he and his dad were there when they were brought in.
