Becoming a dad wasn’t something that Matt had ever really let himself think about too much, his girlfriend while he was at Hogwarts had ended up cheating on him and after graduation Matt had thrown himself into his job, even more so after Karina died. He hadn’t left himself much time for dating and if he was honest he hadn’t really wanted to either. There was something terrifying about the thought of letting someone see beneath the surface and get to know the scars he carried with him and he hadn’t known whether he would ever be ready to open himself up like that. Ana was the only person he had felt like he could talk to about his past other than one friend of Karina’s who had kept in touch with him after she died and he knew that he could trust Ana completely. There had been something there between them before he even became her guardian, they had slept together before Ana was attacked and ever since he was assigned to protect her they had done their best to keep things professional since Matt knew it could cost him his job if anything happened between them but it was getting harder and harder to do these days. Matt knew that he had fallen in love with her and if he was honest it had been that way for a long time. If there was one person he could see himself starting a family with it was her but he knew that it wasn’t an option. “I’ll take your word for that, I’ve never actually spent any time around children,” he chuckled. It came with the territory of pushing everyone away when his sister died, a lot of the friends he’d had when he was at Hogwarts had probably settled down and started families of their own by now but he hadn’t kept in touch with any of them so it had just worked out like that. Even when he protected families that had small children he never spent time with the kids because he was there to do his job and nothing more. “I’ve seen kids have a meltdown from a distance and I’ve always wondered how their parents deal with it but I guess it’s different when it’s your own kid,” he added with a shrug. As Ana said he would make an amazing dad, Matt hesitated before shaking his head. “I doubt that,” he sighed. “The protective stuff I could do in my sleep but I have no idea how to be a parent. My mum was never much of one and I don’t even know who my dad is. I could pass him in the street and I wouldn’t even know it.” He had tried asking his mum about the man when he was younger but she hadn’t told him anything and in the end he had given up asking. He’d found his birth certificate among some old paperwork when he’d helped her hand a clear out after Karina died and his father’s name had been left blank so even that was a dead end. “It isn’t like that for most guardians, our job is intense but we are allowed to have lives outside of it. I just choose not to,” he admitted. It was easier that way than to dwell on the fact that he still felt like he’d failed his sister and he was now all alone in the world other than a mum who was still more interested in drinking than she was anything else. Most of the money he made as a Guardian, and that wasn’t a lot to begin with, went to her so she’d have enough to live off of since she didn’t work but she was all he had left. As Ana said she might look back on all the sleep she gave up, Matt couldn’t help but laugh. “I doubt that. You love it, just admit it,” he teased. Ana was always in her element when she was playing quidditch or training so he didn’t believe that for a minute.
“Thank you,” Matt said sincerely as Ana said that she was sorry for his loss. “Honestly, other than to Summer and one other friend I haven’t talked about Karina much since she died. It felt right to tell you,” he admitted. Ana meant so much to him and even though it was dangerous territory considering he was her guardian and she was his charge, Ana put her life in his hands every single day so it only felt fair that she should get to know who she was trusting a little. He had never done that with any of his other charges but Ana was different to all of them so he didn’t regret opening up to her about it. He actually wouldn’t have blamed her if she had said that she’d wanted a different guardian to protect her after that but deep down he had known that she would never do that. Ana wasn’t that kind of person and Matt really was glad about that. She always worried about others rather than herself and that was clear to Matt when she offered to make life easier for him by not going out as much. Matt knew that he would never ask her to do that, after all it was his job to adapt and protect her rather than the other way around. He wanted Ana to live as normal a life as possible and even though he had hated the thought of her being with someone else, he had still suggested it in case that would make her happy. Matt couldn’t shake the feeling that he and Ana were meant to be together and even though right now they couldn’t be, he still wanted her to be happy. As Ana said she was worried she’d forgotten what normality is, Matt couldn’t help but laugh. “That makes two of us but perhaps we can figure it out together,” he chuckled. His life wasn’t what anyone would consider to be normal these days so he knew he wasn’t the best person to be giving Ana suggestions but if they put their heads together he hoped they would be able to come up with ways for her to have a normal life again. Ever since becoming her guardian he’d told himself and Ana that nothing could happen between them again but in that moment his resolve waivered and for once he decided to throw caution to the wind and lost himself in being with her.
That definitely wasn’t how Matt had ever thought that the end of Ana’s practice session would go but as he lay there with her in his arms afterwards, Matt couldn’t deny that he was perfectly content. He knew that their problems hadn’t just magically disappeared, the person who had attacked Ana was still out there somewhere and their relationship was still forbidden, but for the moment it felt like they were in their own little bubble where none of that mattered and Matt wasn’t in a hurry for it to end. “I think that will definitely end up happening a few times. This place has forever changed for me now,” Matt chuckled. He knew that he would never see the quidditch pitch in the same way again and he wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same for Ana. He hadn’t planned on any of this happening but if he was honest it was something that he had wanted for a long time and he was pretty sure that she had too. They had been doing so well at keeping their distance but the connection was still there between them and it seemed to have only grown stronger during the time he had been her guardian. Matt knew that was only natural given the amount of time they spent together but he had never felt like this about anyone before and he refused to think of that as a bad thing regardless of the fact that anything happening between them was meant to be forbidden. As far as he was concerned it wasn’t a mistake and even though he knew that it couldn’t happen again if he wanted to remain her guardian, he knew that he was never going to regret it. “I’m glad,” he admitted as Ana said that she didn’t have any regrets either. He really had been worried that it might be seen as him taking advantage of her given their circumstances but Ana had been adamant that it was what she wanted and she had even been the one to instigate it after he’d kissed her so he was so glad that she hadn’t changed her mind afterwards. It seemed that a lot of things were happening that Matt hadn’t planned on because he hadn’t planned on telling her that he loved her either but he hadn’t been able to keep the fact that he loved Ana to himself a moment longer so he’d had to put that out there and face the consequences. “You do?” he asked as Ana said she loved him too. He had always thought that no one could ever love him, he’d never felt the unconditional love of a parent while he was growing up and even though he had known that Karina had loved him more often than not it had felt like she hated him and wanted nothing to do with him. Matt had always thought that he was too broken and too guarded to ever deserve anyone’s love but it was different with Ana, everything was different with her. As she spoke again, Matt shook his head. “I would never do that Ana, you should know that by now,” he said gently even though he didn’t blame her for asking. “I’ve never said those words to anyone before but I mean them with you. I know I shouldn’t but I can’t help it, I love you Ana.”
