James had always known that his seventh year at Hogwarts was going to be eventful but the truth was that he had never realised just how much so. To begin with he had felt sure that they’d made a mistake when he’d opened his letter to find the Head Boy badge enclosed with it, sure he’d been made a Prefect a couple of years before but being Head Boy was something different entirely. He hadn’t expected that at all but there had been a letter in there congratulating him on being chosen and from that moment on he had known that he would have to do his best to make sure that things went as smoothly as possible this year. The Enlightened had thrown a spanner in the works, they had revealed magic to the world in the worst way possible and now the whole world seemed to have been thrown into chaos. Thankfully they were all safe at Hogwarts and the villages closest to the school seemed to be staying safe as well but there were lots of other places around the country and around the world as a whole that weren’t as lucky. Now the truth was out there they couldn’t do anything to take it back or play what so many people had seen off as something else, towns and cities had been attacked with magic in front of muggles and people had died. They could never go back and change things now but James knew that they were going to have to find a way to live with each other again once more.
What would happen after he graduated at the end of the year he wasn’t sure but right now he knew that he wanted to make the most of his seventh year while it lasted and he also knew that he wanted to help the other students out as best he could. He had always been protective of his own family, he and Lily were close and he always made a point of checking in with her as much as he could whereas with Albus he tended to have to look out for his younger brother from a distance and not let him see when he was stepping in to get the other students to back off, and he tried to look out for his extended family as well but now he had everyone else to think about as well and that was something that he took more seriously than he had thought he would. James had always tried to be fair with the other students, he knew when to get them to fall into line but he also knew when to let things slide. Just thinking about that was enough to bring back the memory of the end of his sixth year, he had found Iris heading back to her common room after indulging in a little too much drink at a party. He could have turned her in or deducted house points from her but instead he had started walking her back to her common room and she’d ended up kissing him when he’d pulled her aside so she wouldn’t get caught by a professor. They hadn’t talked about the kiss, he’d tried to bring it up but she’d quickly brushed it off by saying she didn’t remember, but that didn’t mean that he hadn’t thought about it quite a bit. He knew that he shouldn’t even be friends with her given that she was a Carrow let alone anything else but he knew what it was like to carry the weight of a family name and the expectations that came with it and his thoughts had turned to her more times than he cared to admit. For now he quickly shook those thoughts from his mind and headed out to the quidditch pitch with his broom and the box containing the quidditch balls in his hands, knowing that a training session before the season started was just what he needed to clear his mind.
