The Yule Ball was something that Summer hadn’t attended since her seventh year. She had started working at the school as a nurse after she graduated and each year she knew that various members of staff chaperoned to make sure that the kids didn’t end up getting into too much trouble but she had never done that herself. Truth be told she always loved spending Christmas Eve with her girls and after she put them to bed she made sure to put their presents under the tree ready for them the next morning. That year had been the same to an extent, she had spent the day with them the way she always did and she had put them to bed but that night she wouldn’t be the one staying with them, her mum had agreed to look after them so she could help out at the Yule Ball. Helping out wasn’t the only reason she wanted to go though, it was an excuse for her to spend some time with Micheal. He was attending as well and she couldn’t resist the chance to see him dressed up. She knew that he normally had to for work but this was different, this time he would be doing it because he wanted to and even though they were going to be there as chaperones that didn’t mean that they couldn’t share a few dances together while they were there.
Calling him her boyfriend didn’t do him any justice, he had been there for her through the darkest time of her life and if she was honest she didn’t know what she and the girls would have done without him. It still seemed a little surreal even now that they were together but she knew that she wouldn’t want it any other way. Summer hadn’t thought that she would ever feel ready to move on after Finn but she did and she knew that he would approve of her relationship with Micheal. He would have wanted her to be happy and the truth was that Summer was. Micheal was helping her have more of a life outside of the girls and while they were always going to be her first priority, the truth was that it meant a lot to know that Micheal saw the real her. For far too long she had been seen as a mother, a sister, a widow and a nurse but with him it was like she was just herself and she had needed that more than she had realised. It had been a long time since Summer had last had an excuse to dress up like this and she smoothed down the front of her dress before fixing her hair. She wasn’t a student so this wasn’t her night but it was the first time that she was going to something like this with Micheal and even though it was only a school dance, Summer knew that she wanted to make the most of it. Heading back downstairs after checking that the girls were both sound asleep, Summer was about to grab her bag and put on her shoes when she heard the doorbell go and she changed direction, making her way to the front door and opening it instead. “Hey, don’t you scrub up well?” she asked, a smile touching her lips as she let her hand rest against his cheek and greeted him with a kiss. “Thank you for picking me up from here, the girls were so excited for tomorrow they didn’t want to go to sleep so I’m running a little late,” she added before taking his hand and leading him inside. “I’ll be ready in a minute, I promise.”
