All day Amelia had been following around her older sister like a lost puppy. She wanted to make friends of her own, but at the moment she was just too nervous to talk to anyone new. Instead she clung to her big sister’s side throughout the entire trip to Hogwarts. By the time they were separated for the Sorting Ceremony, Amelia was too tired to be bothered with walking up to anyone to initiate a conversation. It had been a long journey from Romania to here. Instead she watched as her classmates giggled amongst each other. There were others who sat off by themselves, and the tension surrounding them could be cut by a knife. Amelia was guessing they were nervous about what house they would get sorted into. She was a bit nervous too. Her parents wouldn’t care what she got sorted into, but she didn’t want to be a Slytherin. They seemed mean and most of the evil people in UK history had come from that house. She didn’t think she’d end up there, though. She was competitive yes, but ambitious? She left blind ambition to other people, preferring to live her life and see where it took her.
“Amelia D’Eath!” a voice called, snapping her out of her stupor. Suddenly she could feel butterflies stirring in the pit of her stomach. She stood up at walked across the long hall to the stage. It felt like she was frozen in time as she walked, but soon enough she found herself sitting on the stool and the ancient Sorting Hat was placed on her head. “Ah yes,” it hissed in her ear. “You, my dear, have quite the life ahead of you. Let’s see…” She fidgeted with her cloak as the hat deliberated, then it shouted “Hufflepuff!” Amelia released a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding. She had been one of the first students to get sorted, so when she made her way over to the table there was plenty of space to sit all by herself near the end of the table. She waved to her sister and was secretly disappointed that she hadn’t been sorted into Gryffindor too. She supposed she wasn’t brave enough for that, though. So far she had never really had to stand up for herself, so there had been no reason to be brave. She wasn’t noble enough for Gryffindor either. She had hurt people that she cared about. She didn’t deserve such a virtuous house.
She leaned back in her seat to watch as the next boy was sorted into Ravenclaw. The line of first years waiting to be sorted was so long and she could already feel herself getting tired. They were going in alphabetical order by last name and they were only on E. She desperately wished she had brought a book or something else to entertain herself with.
