Ocean blue eyes stared down anyone who had the nerve to approach Mara. Nonetheless, she couldn’t stop all of the stares she got as she loaded her plate with as many pastries as could fit. Mara had never tried to hide that she had a sweet tooth, but she did take most of her meals directly from the kitchen to her dorm so she didn’t have to deal with people. Maybe they were just gawking because she was here at all.
It wasn’t like she wanted to be any more than they wanted her here. She’d been forced to come upstairs to get food because even from the entrance of the kitchen she could hear bubbly voices coming from within. She didn’t care who saw her enter the kitchen, but these people seemed far too friendly. She wasn’t looking to meet anyone new today. Or, worse, run into an old client who thought they could speak a bit too openly about their dealings with her. There were some such classmates she had to hunt down and threaten the next time she got the chance, but it was too early in the morning. She wasn’t fully awake yet, but the strong cup of coffee she’d grabbed along with her pastries would wake her up with a nice jolt.
She found a secluded seat at the end of the Slytherin table, much to the chagrin of the nearby students who all scooted a little further away just at the sight of her. A blissful hush fell over their conversations, but Mara knew it wouldn’t last long. She didn’t pay enough attention to know whether these housemates had the misfortune of knowing her or if they were simply judging her based on appearance like so many others did. Mara didn’t mind it when people judged her based on her harsh exterior. That was why she maintained her bright hair (today it was a stunning red) and dark makeup. She didn’t really need makeup considering she could shift her features into any shape she wanted, but powders and creams were easier to maintain than magic. She didn’t have to think about them once she’d quickly applied them in the morning. As she took a sip of her coffee, dark red lipstick rubbed off on the cup proving her wrong. She had plenty of lipsticks that didn’t rub off, but this one went too well with her hair to pass up just because she’d have to reapply.
She took a bite out the nearest pastry, a pumpkin pastie with a decadent vanilla frosting on top, before pulling out her notebook. She wanted to get lost in plans for her most recent potion. It was near perfection, and just in time for Valentine’s Day too. She would be offering a harmless perfume that smelled like amortentia. Of course, Mara wouldn’t be using it herself. She had no need to smell attractive, not when she’d be hiding in her room for most of the week. Valentine’s Day was too gushy for her. There was no one she was interested in, and even if there was it wouldn’t mean anything. She didn’t want to belong to anyone else ever again.
