i'm gonna make it on my own |
The Great Hall was, on a blissfully rare occasion, quiet and empty. A house elf or two skittered past, preparing their victuals for the upcoming lunch period. They moved past Vee with practiced ease, perhaps sensing that she did not wish to be bothered. Surely her demeanor couldn't be that off-putting, the Weasley mused. Who was she kidding? The Whomping Willow was more cuddly than she was. Vee flipped another page in her textbook with her left hand and absently groped for her spoon with her right. Without taking her eyes off the yellowed pages, she popped another spoonful of yogurt into her mouth, mulling over the words of the author as her teeth mulled over deliciously crunchy pieces of granola. The house elves had never made anything that Vee disliked, and she thoroughly enjoyed sneaking away during times like these, where she could grab an easy snack from the kitchen while she studied. Most of the other students were busy with classes or enjoying the sunny day. But Vee was unbothered by the happy rays filtering in through the tall windows, her back turned so that her book and her view were shrouded with a soft shadow. She spent so much time with her eyes crammed into books that the last thing she needed was a headache from squinting against the sun. The latest of Vee's studying materials was a curious one: Gilderoy Lockhart's Wanderings with Werewolves. The writing was as awful as she had expected, but as it was elective reading for her hitwizard training, Vee had immediately purchased a hardcover copy. The purpose of the book, aside from testing Vee's gag reflex, was meant to be a study on werewolves and their place in society. How she was ever supposed to glean any real instruction amidst the self-pandering of the author was beyond her. Finally reaching her breaking point, Vee closed the book with a sneer of disgust and pushed it a few inches in front of her. She took a long sip of hot coffee, sighing as the honey-infused liquid burned her throat and spread its warmth throughout her body. Finally allowing herself to look out the window, she saw a few students playing on the grounds and two more walking towards the black lake; they all seemed happy, judging by the smiles and silent laughs on their faces. Vee picked up the bronzed spoon out of her now-empty yogurt bowl, and looked at her upside-down reflection in it. The hazy, sepia-toned mirror of herself looked haggard, with dark, narrow eyes and a grim mouth. Vee sighed and ran her fingers through her gently tousled waves, grimacing as the blonde locks tangled and pulled. When had she last brushed her hair? "Gee, no wonder no one wants to hang out with you," she muttered under her breath, putting the spoon down with a little too much force. She sighed again as metal tinked against metal, and took another swig of coffee. At least she would always have caffeine to keep her company. @open first post woo! |
i'll always take the harder road
