“I feel so stupid right now,” Grace breathed as she smoothed down the front of the dress she had picked out for the Yule Ball before fixing her hair. It was Christmas Eve and normally she would be spending the time with her dad but that year she and Minnie had decided to go to the Yule Ball together as friends and her dad was meant to be meeting Summer there so things really were different that year. Grace would be lying if she said that she wasn’t a little jealous that she wasn’t the only girl in her dad’s life any longer but she had always known that she would have to learn to share him eventually. He had put his love life on hold while he raised her and she was grateful to him for that but she wanted him to be happy and Summer seemed to make him feel that way so she knew that she really couldn’t hold it against him. She still had no idea what had made her mum leave but her mind was full of so many different possibilities and most of them weren’t good so she was beyond grateful that her dad had decided to stay.
He was starting a new chapter of his life and Grace knew that she wanted to do the same but the truth was that she wasn’t sure how. She knew that she liked Minnie, that had become increasingly obvious as they had started spending more time together and Grace found her heart racing every time the other girl was around but talking about her feelings wasn’t something that she was very good at. She was the kind of person who preferred to keep things to herself and so far she had been doing just that with Minnie but whether or not she would be able to continue keeping her mouth shut remained to be seen. Either way, they were going to the Yule Ball together and Grace knew that she needed to step out of her comfort zone. Dresses weren’t something that she ever wore unless it was for an event that she went to with her dad for his work so she felt a little uncomfortable but she knew that she wanted to make the effort. She knew that chances were that some of her friends were going to be there as well but the truth was that it was Minnie that she was focused on impressing right now. Grace had had a few kisses and been on a few dates over the last few years but that was about it. This felt different and just the thought of seeing Minnie again was enough to give her butterflies but she knew that she needed to put those aside for now because she didn’t want to keep Minnie waiting.
After telling her dad that she would see him there, Grace made her way to Hogwarts and thanked the Guardian who had escorted her when she reached the doors to the Great Hall. “Come on, you can do this,” she breathed, taking a deep breath before heading into the Great Hall. Grace knew that there were going to be some students who would probably wish that she wasn’t there but the truth was that she didn’t care. All she wanted was to have a nice night with Minnie and that was what she was going to do. Looking around the room, her gaze swept over the faces of those in attendance but she couldn’t see Minnie anywhere so she headed to the refreshments table to grab a drink while she waited for Minnie to arrive.
