For most people it had been almost four months since the world had fallen apart but for Carly it had been exactly a year. A year ago today she had broken off whatever was going on between her and Justin and she had broken her own heart in the process. A year ago today she had been attacked on her way home from the Yule Ball and she would have died had a Guardian not interrupted the attack and managed to get her to St Mungo's. Her adoptive parents had been killed after that as retaliation for her surviving the attack, the man responsible wanting to make them pay since Carly was now out of his reach. She had never wanted any of that to happen but Carly hadn't had a choice in the matter. Throughout her whole life everything that happened had been dictated by her biological parents despite the fact that they hadn't been a part of her life for years but now she was free from that hold. Now her life was her own to do with what she wanted and she was doing her best to figure out what that was.
Earlier that year Carly had hit rock bottom but things had looked up after that and she knew that it was all thanks to her new family. They had taken a chance on her and decided to take her in despite Carly's protestations that she was cursed and they should get as fat away from her as they could. They had loved her anyway and not a day went by when she wasn't grateful to them for it. She was proud to be a Carter officially now and even though she had thought that they too would abandon her when they found out that they were expecting another baby, it had happened to her before, Sam had made it clear that she was one of them for life and Carly believed him. She had the family she had always wanted but now they had the Enlightened to worry about. After what had happened after the Yule Ball last year Carly had seriously thought about giving this one a miss but in the end her dad had talked her into going so that she could use it as a way of erasing the painful memories from last year. That was something that Carly desperately needed so she had gone shopping for the perfect dress before Christmas and now that was what she was wearing as she made her way up to Hogwarts. She loved being able to walk to and from school whenever she wanted to and it helped knowing that there were going to be people she knew in attendance. Justin was her date, of course, but as Carly scanned her surroundings she couldn't see any sign of him just yet so she made her way to the refreshments table to grab a drink while she waited for him to arrive.
