It felt like a lifetime had passed since Dex had been taken. Back at the Ministry office in Ecuador they hadn't wanted to tell him anything about what had happened since he had been taken or how long it had been, they claimed it was because they didn't want to upset him but deep down Dex had a feeling it was because they just didn't know how to break it to him. They had seen the carnage that the camp had become but no one would truly ever understand what he had gone through. Out of the group of twenty that he had gone away with, he was the sole survivor and he had no idea how long he had been held there for. Thankfully none of them had pressed him for details of what had happened, they had simply reported on the devastation they saw at the camp and confirmed that he hadn't done anything wrong. Dex wasn't sure that he could talk about what had happened to him during that time right now and truth be told he wasn't sure that he ever would be able to. It had been a few days since he had escaped and made it to the field office of the British Ministry in Ecuador and a few hours since he had arrived at St Mungo's but every time he closed his eyes he was back there living in that hell once more. They kept telling him that in time it would get easier but Dex wasn't so sure. Seeing all of that had broken something inside of him, something it might never be possible to fix, but Dex knew that he would at least find a way to deal with it the same way he had done after Cece died.
It was strange being back in the UK now, the man who helped him at the field office had run tests to make sure that he was who he said he was and not an imposter but the hospital insisted on running their own tests. Dex supposed it was something that the Ministry was making them do, after all if what he had overheard the Healers talking outside his room about was true then he had been legally declared dead some time ago. They thought he was asleep at the time so they hadn't made any attempt to keep their voices down and Dex had heard them say that they weren't sure how he had survived. Truth be told he still wasn't sure of that himself but somehow he had made it and now he was going to have to pick up the pieces of his life. He had been checked out by the Healers when he got to St Mungo's, the man who found him had said that they couldn't give him all the treatment he needed in Ecuador and from what the Healers had said they weren't sure if they were going to have to operate so it was a case of having to wait and see. He had seen the looks of horror on their faces when they had seen the extent of his injuries, some of them had healed a long time ago but the scars still remained and from what they had said, they weren't hopeful that they would be able to get rid of them for him. If he was honest Dex didn't really mind that too much as he saw them as a reminder that he had survived but he wasn't so sure that others would feel the same.
The first thing he had done when he arrived at the hospital was ask to see his family and the staff had promised that would be arranged once they had verified his identity. He had wanted to ask to see Kelsey as well but he had finally heard one of the nurses say he had been gone for years and even though Dex didn't know exactly how long it had been since the days had blended in together while he was imprisoned he knew that it wouldn't be fair to ask her to come see him, not like this. He had no idea whether she had found someone else and just the thought of it was enough to make his heart ache since Dex knew that his love for her was stronger than ever so his family was the much safer bet. Some of his superficial injuries had been healed but he still looked like he'd been trampled by an erumpent and he knew that he didn't want that to be the first impression Kelsey had of him after all this time. She didn't know that she was all he'd had to hold onto while he was in Ecuador, that it was his love for her that had kept him going, and if she had moved on then he knew that he would have to somehow find a way to finally let her go. That was a problem for another day, though. Right now Dex didn't even know how to begin processing the fact that he had been gone for years or that everyone had believed him to be dead, hearing it from strangers made it all seem so hollow somehow and the words sounded foreign to him. One thing was for sure, he needed to see his family but no one would tell him when he would be able to do that. He was on a secure ward on his own away from prying eyes and everyone who entered his room was only allowed to do so after swearing a vow that they wouldn't talk to anyone about the fact that he was alive other than those on a list of names approved by the Ministry. It had sounded crazy when he had heard a disgruntled nurse talking about how annoying it was to one of her colleagues at first but the more he thought about it the more he realised he had seen the tactic before. The Ministry would want to break the news in their own way when they were ready and presumably after they had spoken to the families of his fallen friends. It made sense and it was something that he was happy to go along with but it meant that he seemed to be spending a lot of time alone. There was a Ministry worker posted outside his room at all times but the man refused to say anything and the truth was that Dex wasn't much in the mood for talking anyway so instead all he could do was lay there staring at the photo of Kelsey which was the only thing in the world that he owned right now.
