While she knew the grief and the pain she’d been through was traumatic and hard in her own way, as did everyone in Dexter’s life who’d suffered in the wake of his presumed death she didn’t think for a moment how hard every single day had been for Dexter himself now that she knew that he wasn’t in fact dead all this time, and had been alive with no one looking for him, no one was going to come in and rescue him. She wondered how often he’d asked himself if that would be the day he was saved until the hope fizzled out of him, if the hope fizzled out if he woke every day waiting for it to be the end. Kelsey would never ask if one day down the line Dexter wanted to share the intricate details she’d listen, but she’d never ask, because his trauma and horror were his to tell on his own time, and if he was never ready she accepted that. There were days she’d never tell him about in his absence, when that dark wave of grief threatened to drown her, how she’d struggled. She didn’t want him to feel any guilt though she knew it wasn’t his fault and there was no blame to place on his shoulders she imagined he’d shoulder it regardless, and it wasn’t a time she liked looking at, and honestly she was afraid if she looked too deeply it’d pull her back down into that abyss to claim her forever. “I don’t know how your parents or siblings did it. They have a strength I know I don’t have.” She’d struggled enough let alone imagining it being her son or brother after already losing a daughter and sister, no losing the love of her life was more than enough pain for her.
She had other plans for forever now, and they involved Dexter being back in her life and figuring out how much the other had changed and how they would fit back together now, the only thing in which she had complete faith in was that they did fit together, that no matter their pieces being jagged and bent they’d fit back together and become stronger in the end for it. She didn’t want Dexter to shield her from any repercussions of his survival, she didn’t want him to shoulder any of what was to come alone as he started to heal and recover and rebuild the pieces of his life that had been lost and scattered when they’d said he was dead. She didn’t think that anyone would think, on a large scale, that he had killed his friends when he’d already been investigated and cleared by the Ministry but she knew that his worries were valid to him and so she didn’t try and diminish their impact. “I’m sure the detail will go away once the families are through the shock.” She said gently, wondering if it wasn’t also to protect Dexter from himself as he adjusted back to civilian life, not in captivity. It wouldn’t be easy but she couldn’t imagine being anywhere but by his side where she belonged. “I’m in it with you for the long haul. Our hearts belong together you aren’t escaping me this easily. I’m holding you to that forever promise we made all those years ago.” She said knowing they’d been young and in love and forever didn’t mean forever when you were young and love could be puppy love but she knew what she had when she felt it and it was the most real and serious thing she’d ever felt in her life.
That kiss cemented any doubts that may have lingered, the way she felt the crackle of electricity and fire in their kiss that felt like their souls were breathing life back into the other with its renewed presence, lightening the blackened parts of them that’d suffered in their own ways when they were apart and she poured everything she had into that kiss and when it broke it’d spilled down her cheeks before she wiped them away feeling lighter after his lips had been on hers and confessed how much she’d hated that date on his stone. It was the only thing she’d hated about using the stone to grieve, was that date and the not knowing the real date. That even in stone it wasn’t a concrete fact and if anything else Kelsey used facts and concrete proof as a basis for things in her life she didn’t understand, she wasn’t afraid to dig in and do the work to get the answers and in this case, no answer could ever be positively identified. “Yeah I can imagine seeing it is hard. At the same time, I can see why you’d have to see it for yourself. In your situation, I would. Seeing is believing and all that.” She wouldn’t blame him for never wanting to see it again, though. She was happy to never see it again despite the comfort it brought her to have the real person in front of her instead.
The idea of getting to tell him a real him that wasn’t a name on a stone all about her day made her a little giddy inside at the chance to tell him about all the mundane stupid things, all the moments too inconsequential to really be a big deal but just a little tidbit about her day she’d be able to share with him. Get to hear his chuckle at a joke someone said or something silly she did, share in her accomplishments no matter how minor, and just bask in his love every day they were together. She could fill the wishes of a dozen shooting stars in her visions of the future and what it could hold for them. “Not as much as I am looking forward to sharing it.” Sharing things with him had been hard at first, always so scared he’d turn out like Madison had and betray her or only have befriended her for money but the moment she’d let him in, truly let him in, he’d been in and there wasn’t any going back, now that he was back that inherent love and trust were back as well. “Yeah. Your family couldn’t handle the idea of an empty coffin so at your service people came to bring tokens or letters to fill it instead. They didn’t disappoint.” Kelsey had put her own letters and tokens of her love inside the casket, and what she could remember of one of the letters she hoped he’d never read as it was likely cringey. She wouldn’t have to come here anymore, now that Dexter was back, but she likely would stop and visit CeCe from time to time especially until he was able to visit himself as often as he wanted after the removal of the headstone.
It all still felt a little surreal if she was honest, almost as if it was too good to be true but if this was a cruel joke or an attempt to imitate Dexter for some awful reason they’d done their research because the way he knew the small intimate details of their history and of course the way she reacted to his lips on hers, it could only be him she’d feel that spark with, deep down she couldn’t imagine any imitation giving her that same feeling as she smiled at him calling him tall and handsome as he made fun of her vertically challenged self. He was lucky he was so handsome to get away with it as much as he had in the past and now. “They broke the mold with you.” She told him just so happy to have him back and never imagined these little things would affect her so much that it was a little overwhelming in the best way to feel them all as she finally got to look towards a future with Dexter not just an imagined what if. If she was overwhelmed she could only imagine what Dexter might be feeling so she was quick to offer to leave with him quite frankly feeling like she’d go anywhere with him without hesitation as he suggested somewhere private as he wasn’t supposed to be making grand appearances while his friends’ families were still finding out the awful news of their loved one's deaths. She gave him a moment alone with his sister as she waited a little further from him before they made their way from the cemetery together as he asked about his parents’ number. “Do you want to go back to my apartment? It’s about as private as I can think of. Otherwise, I’m sure there’s some rundown bar or cafe we can go to. Or if you want to be alone you could go to while I go to said apartment.” She hadn’t wanted to presume that together meant literally spending every moment together and if he wanted time to process everything that had happened today she’d somehow find a way to leave his side. “I don’t. I, um, I had it once back when phones were just starting to boom in popularity in the magical world, I’d gotten one of the earliest models and about a year later upgraded but it wasn’t compatible to switch everything with it. I’d already lost contact with them so their info didn’t get manually switched. I’m sorry.” She apologized. It was harder than she thought to admit she didn’t have his parents’ number and that she’d drifted from his family shortly after his funeral as they’d all grieved his loss. She didn’t want him to think there was any malice to it, there wasn’t anything but grief and grief did funny things, especially after she found the ring. “You know that protective detail was for your own good not to give them the slip, you goof. But yeah I imagine they are worried if they hear about that.” She teased rolling her eyes at him playfully at the thought of him being assigned a protective detail and then giving them the slip so easily, “I didn’t think it was easy to give those types of people the slip. I’m impressed.” She added with a small laugh and smile, feeling so light on her feet now that Dexter was alive and his hand was in hers. She could take on anything with him by her side.
