None of what had happened over the last few week felt real. For three years Dex had been held prisoner, starved and tortured and he had honestly thought that he was never goingnto make it out of there alive. It was only meant to be a fun trip with a group of his friends but it had changed Dex's life forever. He had gone away with a group of nineteen of his friends and he had ended up being the only one to make it out of there alive. Truth be told he didn't feel like he deserved to have lived when so many of the people he cared about had died, he knew he didn't deserve it and had it not been for the fact that he had tried fighting back that first day then he knew that he probably wouldn't have made it either. The food he had been given was awful and there hadn't been a lot of it but they had grown lax with slipping the potion they kept on hand to suppress his magic into the little food they did give him. It hadn’t felt like it at the time but it turned out that being kept in solitary and being given the scraps that no one else wanted had saved his life. He had spent a few days regaining his strength in the field office of the Ministry in Ecuador before he was deemed fit to be transferred to St Mungo's and after that he had spent a few days in hospital. He had quickly grown tired of the way the staff had fussed around him while they were in his room and gossiped about him as soon as they thought they were out of earshot. Dex had spent years trapped in darkness so his other senses had grown during that time and he could hear a lot better than they thought he could. He had finally been given the all clear that morning when his Healer had confirmed that they weren't going to have to operate, none of them could seem to understand how he was healing so well all things considered but Dex was taking that as a good sign. He was all skin and bones when he got to St Mungo's, he was a mess, but a lot had changed since then. He'd had the chance to clean himself up, he'd cut his hair and shaved and they had given him a potion that he was under strict orders to take twice a day to get his body mass back to what it should be. Dex still wasn't quite back to looking like himself yet but he was doing a lot better than he had been when he got there and he knew that had to count for something.
They had healed his most serious wounds but some they had left to heal on their own. The cut over his eye still hurt and his right arm was still bandaged but he knew they would heal and so would the others. His whole body still ached right now but he had grown so tired of staring at the same four walls that he had discharged himself from the hospital despite how much his Healers had protested. Dex had felt like he was going crazy in there, everyone expected him to talk about what had happened but he wasn't ready to do that and he didn't know if he ever would be. He had tried with Satine, Julian and Micheal, it still seemed crazy to him that his former boss was now the Minister for Magic, but the last thing he wanted was to relive all of that. He knew he would have to pass a psychological assessment to be cleared to go back to work but right now that was the last thing on his mind. The Ministry were still keeping the news that he had survived quiet while they notified the rest of his friends' families so for the time being he knew he needed to keep his head down. He had been warned that there might be some backlash, after all even though they had all been his friends the families were likely to be angry that he had survived when their loved ones hadn't, and he had been assigned a protection detail but that was overkill as far as Dex was concerned. He could take care of himself and the last thing he wanted at the moment was to have to take orders from someone else so he had given them the slip. He knew that they were going to be annoyed when they caught up with him but he didn't care, he had needed some time to himself to process everything that had happened and everything that he had been told. Satine, Julian and Micheal had all told him that he had been declared dead years ago but Micheal had gone one step further and told him that a funeral had been held for him and an empty casket had been buried in the grave next to Cece's. It was one thing to hear about that but Dex knew that he needed to see it for himself and that was where he headed after he ditched his protection detail. He still didn't have a wand and his magic hadn't quite returned to him in full just yet so it took a while but eventually he made it to the graveyard. He still remembered the way to his sister's grave since he had visited her on more than a few occasions over the years after she died but just like they had said, there was another tombstone next to hers. He could see Cece's name on her tombstone as he approached and, sure enough, the one next to it was engraved with his name. There was something else though, fresh flowers and.... "Kelsey," he breathed, taking in the sight of the woman he still loved for the first time in three years. He had wanted to ask about her but he had been afraid of what he might find out. After everything that had happened the last thing he wanted was to find out that she was in love with someone else. He wasn't sure that his heart could take that after everything else he had been through so he had thought he would have time to prepare himself for it but now here she was and just the sight of her was enough to take his breath away. He knew he needed to say something to let her know he was there but he couldn't, in that moment all he could do was watch her, unsure whether she had heard him speak before.
