The test of ones leadership was never shown in times of peace, not like Micheal Herondale was being tested now. For a year and 11 months there had been relative peace in the wizarding world, nothing like the wizarding wars in the past that he'd fought in but never led or directed. Micheal had been in the Ministry of Magic for well over 100 years now, a mere mortal man working in lowly departments and then the immortal vampire moving to bigger departments just to better use his new strength and immortality to help others. He'd fought for justice before, and he would fight for justice now, but in a different way. He knew now he couldn't be in the field the same way, the target on his back was bigger, he was important now, he was leading to the wizarding world through the trials and tribulations of a new threat and new way of life. Magic was no longer a secret, it was out in the open and there was no going back, there was no amount of memory charms that would erase the reveal of magic. He spent most of his days these days shut up with the top Aurors and Head Guardian working to discover who these Enlightened members were, a newly formed cyber division that had formed with the adaptation of technology in the magical world scouring cameras in the muggle world to identify those responsible with little luck. He'd also spent time with the headmaster and headmistress at Hogwarts arranging protective details and placing aurors and guardians alike near the grounds patrolling and escorting students to and from the village of Hogsmeade with other patrol units there. Anything to help keep the students safe. His decisions weren't controversial, they were well supported even if he didn't have the added bias of his own daughter being a student there, most of the parents at the Ministry had sons daughters hell even some grandsons and granddaughters who attended Hogwarts and the protection of the school was first priority on all their minds, his as well.
It was one of the sure ways to see his daughter since she back to school, during his visits to the school he always made it a point to see her, however briefly, to check on her and her wellbeing, and just enjoy spending some time with his not so little girl. He could still vividly remember her as an infant and then a toddler learning to walk, to run, to vampire speed run, and the amount of charms he'd put around the home to prevent her from hurting herself, nearly all the heavy furniture with sticking charms so nothing would topple over if she pulled up on it a little too hard with her strength and he marvelled at this little girl who had to learn everything he had, but also had to learn how to control the vampire that she'd been born as. Her name was fitting, she was his saving grace, his life.
It made him work that much harder to stamp out any threats that could put her in danger and if his predecessor hadn't already made big strides in taking care of the wizarding world's acceptance of vampires he sure as hell would have to make a brighter future for Grace and all the vampire children like her. There was gossip surrounding his taking over the position, that since he was a vampire how did he retire, he wouldn't die, or age, would he lead them forever? Was his reign permanent? Those were all questions he'd had to field early in his promotion but had been put aside at the sign of the Enlighened. He was at Hogwarts now having finished a meeting with the headmaster and headmistress in the headmistresses office this time and unlike usual hadn't had the chance to inform his daughter he was there beforehand as he'd went straight from meeting to meeting, and the first had overlapped and led him to use the floo network he rarely used to appear in the office barely on time, to which he'd apologised several times to both the leaders of the school. The meetings didn't have to take place in person, but he preferred to do his business in person rather than through phone or owls for those who didn't accept the changing of the times and preferred the magical tried and true method of communication. The meeting was brief, but productive and they found themselves in general conversation before a phone went off and he realized an hour had passed since the meeting and they wrapped it up, "Before you go headmistress could I inquire a small favor from you?" He asked politely and after reminding him yet again to just call her Kirsten, one of those old habits from his youth he'd found hardest to break, and told him of course, he amended his words, "Could you summon Grace up here please, Kirsten. Don't tell her I'm here. I'd like to surprise her, feel free to make it seem as if she was in trouble." He requested and she laughed agreed and told him her office was free for them to visit and once they vacated it'd lock up on its own before she and Will, who he shook hands with, vacated the office and he stood and strolled around the office, looking at the photos she'd placed on the walls, the books on the shelves and waited for his daughter to appear.
