IT SEEMS I FOUND THE ROAD TO NOWHERE
A small boy with a tight, nervous expression followed his parents quietly through the throng of people surrounding them. Clutched like a vice in his arms was an ornate cage housing his dear Apollo. The owl's head swiveled to and fro as it surveyed the area with rapt attention. His owner was a little less curious, as Scorpius pointedly avoided looking at anyone or anything too closely, trying his hardest to disappear into the mass of bodies.
He was going to Hogwarts. Part of him feared that when he got there, they would immediately put him on a train back home. We don't want Death Eater brats here, a disembodied voice sneered. But his mother had assured him that he would be welcomed there just as they all had been. That reassured him a little...very little.
As he trudged behind his father, who was pushing his belongings ahead on a trolley, Scorpius spared a glance at the station. The Hogwarts Express loomed ahead, bold and bright as the day it was made. That made him even more nervous. Would he have to sit by himself? God, how humiliating. He wished Flora was just a year older; they could have sat together, and then maybe he wouldn't be so petrified at the thought of being on his own for the first time in his life. As much as he hated to admit it, he was spoiled by the safety of security of his home.
Much, much too soon, the three of them came to a half before one of the inviting doorways of the train. Immediately, Scorpius's heart began to race. He looked left and right at the other children hugging their parents and saying their goodbyes. As he looked up at his own, he saw pride gleaming in both pairs of eyes. They were so proud of him. And maybe they secretly hoped he would have the school experience they missed out on. His father in particular seemed a little choked up. The elder Malfoy cleared his throat and began to speak. Scorpius nodded along, not really hearing but merely going through the motions. His parents were soon hugging him and wishing him well. With leaden feet, he allowed his belongings to be towed away by a station hand as he boarded the train.
He could hear the other students chattering away from their compartments, forming small groupings in aisle as they all decided where to sit and who to sit with. He swallowed hard and quickly ducked into the first empty compartment he found, shutting the door behind him with a little too much force. He sat down in one of the plush seats, settling in and putting his satchel in the spot next to him. His eyes traveled to the window, where he could still see the bustling patrons of the train station milling about, all of them waiting, just as he was, for the train to depart.
What had he gotten himself into?
